WEEKEND READING | Sustainable Goods | PORTLAND, MAINE FOOD MAGAZINE
Happy Friday! Jess here.
As we just celebrated the 50th anniversary of Earth Day I wanted to cover some sustainable goods I’ve been testing out. My family and I are trying to be conscious of using single-use plastic in our home. One of the ways we are going about this is by not buying sandwich bags or plastic wrap. I have a toddler though, and anyone with a toddler knows they aren’t the most efficient eaters. A few bites of an apple here and a half-eaten PB&J sandwich there. I’m constantly trying to find ways to not create necessary waste.
I found a few options that have been working for our family.
The first is from Maine! Anne Riggs Designs sells sustainable goods for the home and family. She sells reusable bread bags, to produce bags, to “unpaper towels”. The real staple in our house are her laminated bowl covers. I use them all the time and they are strong enough to stack in the fridge!
The second is Bee’s Wrap from Middlebury, Vermont. I often pack half-eaten sandwiches in Bee’s Wrap to save for another day and I’m happy to report they keep things fresh! They also smell really great. They put a lot of care into their branding, making sure their customers know how to use their products as well a how to properly wash them. I bought the variety pack and it fits our everyday needs.
The last is probably one you have seen on social media or at your local Whole Foods. Stasher Bags are reusable, non-toxic silicone storage bags. We typically use these when we are bringing some dry cereal or granola to snack on while going for a hike or bike ride. Easy and convenient.
These are just some ways my family is trying to make less waste in the world. What are you using?
xx,
Jess
